Sam, walking in after putting his bike in my shed: Do you have any paprika?

Me: Uh, yeah? Over with the other spices over the sink. Why?

Sam: Some guy asked me for some.

Me: Okay…

Sam: I wonder what format he wants it in…

Sam finds the paprika, walks outside for a moment, then re-enters my apartment.

Sam: Nevermind. He said he can’t use this.

Me: What? Why not?

Sam: I don’t know.

Me: Why did he ask for it then?

Sam: I don’t know. Maybe he was desperate, and he really needed paprika. Like that time we had to go to that emergency dinner party but we didn’t have any ingredents for pasta salad.

Me: Yeah, maybe.

Sam: Or maybe he thought I had weed or something.

Me: I hear flavored cocaine is real popular right now. Maybe he wanted paprika flavored cocaine. Probably weed though.

Sam: Yeah… he did look pretty rastafarian.

Me: Let’s google it!

On Monday, I had to write a work statement to submit, along with some photographs, to the senior art show. It was about how there are some emotions the words just can’t express accurately on their own. After turning that in, I started my reading for my Theory and Critique of 20th Century Art class. It was Gotthold Ephriam Lessing’s Loacoon: An Essay upon the Limits of Painting and Poetry. I got up to the point where, coincidentally, Lessing finds peotry superior to painting because of its ability to express emotions more clearly. I obviously had an issue with this. Because right off the bat I can think of one emotion that reading, poetry or otherwise, has never caused in me. The feeling of awe; jaw dropping, overwhelming, sublime, awe. Never has a poem been able to take my breath away. I’ve never temporarly forgotten everything around me when I turned a corner and was confronted with a poem. James Turrel has given my that feeling. Dan Flavin has given me that feeling. Donald judd has given me that feeling. I could go on and on. But poetry? I’m not so sure. But luckily that’s the subject of class today.

Work sucks.

Okay, so at work, there are three areas of work. This quarter, I am working one shift at each area. Not to over complicate things, they typically put one person at ESP, three people at the 3rd floor, and two people at the 4th floor. But I am so awesome at my job and they trust me so much, I am working at the 4th floor alone on Friday mornings. In a way, it makes me feel good that have been working there so long that my bosses know I can handle the 4th floor alone. But also, it makes me feel unappreciated. I was going to ask for a raise. I really was. But then I realized that since I changed my major and I am technically not a photo major anymore, I’m not technically allowed to work there anymore. So I decided not to push my luck. So yeah, I make minimum wage, still, after two years. But at least I still have a job. An easy job where my bosses trust me. So I guess I’ll just count my blessings instead.

Anyhow, we are on a new quarter- my last one! So we’ll see how it pans out blooging-wise.

How is it that I am a fourth year student, about to graduate, and I have just been assigned my first ever ten page paper? In the freshmen class I am taking for the easy grade, no less. Does this professor seriously want to read over three hundred and fifty pages of freshmen writing? Really? I’m pretty sure everyone knows that the quality is going to drop off around page five, seven if you’re lucky, and the rest will just be writing anything you can to bring the page number up. I’d imagine that’s why most professors assign five to seven page papers. And these are freshmen for crying out loud. Their papers aren’t going to be that good. They haven’t been doing this for very long.

Sheesh. I should be a professor.

Time to quit whining and start writing.

So Derek tried to buy beer at the corner store.

They told him to watch out for the “tall itallian man” because he apparently won’t accept Derek’s out of state lisence.

We find it unlikely that there are any itallian men in this neighborhood, tall or otherwise.
